Wicked Designs- 8 Sentence Sunday- 12-29-13

Sorry to change the stories. If you are wanting to know what happens in my sci-fi romance Across the Stars, don't worry I'll get back to it soon!

But for the next couple of months, I want to share snippets from my upcoming release, a sexy Regency romance called Wicked Designs. the first in a new exciting series The League of Rogues.

Here goes this week's eight sentences!


Godric St. Laurent, the twelfth Duke of Essex, leaned back in his saddle watching the abduction he’d orchestrated unfold. Covering his mouth with a gloved hand, he stifled a yawn. Things were going smoothly. In fact, this entire kidnapping bordered on the point of tedious. They’d intercepted the coach ten minutes before it reached Chessley House. No one witnessed the escort of riders or the driver changing his route. Oddly enough, the young woman hadn’t shown any signs of resistance or concern from inside the coach. Wouldn’t she have made some protestations when she realized what was happening?

Blurb: For too long Miss Emily Parr has been subject to the whims of her indebted uncle and the lecherous advances of his repulsive business partner. Her plan to be done with dominating men forever is simple—find herself a kind husband who will leave her to her books.

               Something wasn’t right. Emily Parr allowed the elderly coachman to help her into the town coach, and the queer look he gave her made her skin crawl. Peering into the dark interior of the vehicle, she was surprised to find it empty. Uncle Albert was supposed to accompany her to social engagements and if not him, certainly a chaperone. Why then was the coach empty?

               She settled into the back seat, her hands clutching her reticule tight enough that the beadwork dug into her palms through her gloves. Perhaps her uncle was meeting with his business partner, Mr. Blankenship. She’d seen Blankenship arrive just before she’d gone upstairs to prepare for the ball.

Across the Stars- 12-8-13

Below is a snippet from my latest WIP called Across the Stars. It's a SFR or Sci-Fi Romance.

Here's the story scoop: Laina is one of the last surviving humans after earth was destroyed when the humans tried to kill the cyborgs they'd created when the cyborgs rebelled and escaped. Now the Cyborgs, with permission of the Galactic High Council have free rein to pursue the last remnants of the human race and do with them as they see fit. Rorik, a cyborg lieutenant stumbles upon Laina hiding in a ship and he captures her, thinking to get information about the whereabouts of other humans. But when the cyborg doctor on Rorik's ship runs tests on Laina, a genetic anomaly in her hand raises questions and he suddenly wonders if Laina might hold the key to the survival of the cyborg race. Can he learn to trust and love his sworn enemy if it means he might save his people?

Rorik has just been visiting with his Captain and learned that according to the genesis diary, human descendants of the scientists who created the cyborgs may have carried genetic dna markers that will allow the cyborgs to complete their own dna wholes and produce children. Laina is currently locked up in the brig and being strangled by a cyborg, but poor Rorik has no idea. (please ignore creative punctuation)

He was halfway through the control when Julian stopped him.

“You see Erik? He’s been missing, didn’t show up for his watch assignment.”

Rorik froze in his tracks; Erik was the one of their Legion who truly hated humans. He’d spent decades in a human prison, tortured daily until Alaric and the others could rescue him; since then he’d never been the same. Something had broken inside him and they’d nicknamed him the Berserker, like back in the Scottish Highlands early in human history. He couldn’t be trusted with humans; he was a loose cannon full of killing rage, and apparently he was missing…

“Did he know we have a human on board?” Rorik ground out harshly as he started to jog to the shift elevator at the end of the hallway.

After passing out from stress and lack of food and water, Laina wakes up cold and alone in a cell in the cyborg ship's brig. Only, she realizes she isn't alone for long. A cyborg she doesn't know has appeared, unlocked her cell and is now trying to kill her. (please ignore creative punctuation)

When her eyes were level with his, he kept her pressed against the wall and black dots splattered across her vision and she sucked through gasping lips for air. Being unable to breathe was perhaps the worst thing she’d ever feared, like being cast into space, opening and closing one’s mouth and finding nothing. Her lungs burned as though on fire and a wild animal panic set in. She clawed at his hands, screeching soundlessly because no breath could pass her voice box. Her body shivered and her legs flailed as her baser instincts demanded air and life. Adrenaline coursed through her and she was nearly able to pry one of his fingers from her throat.

He growled and shook her like a ragdoll. It happened so fast, the sudden rush of darkness, the fading sensations and sense of self; one last squeeze and she was gone.

Laina straightened her shoulders, despite her body shaking from cold and fear.

“What will killing me accomplish? Your people rule the stars and you have the support of the Galactic High Council whereas my people have been hunted near to extinction, what would my death do for you?”

The cyborg paused, his pale gray eyes widened he assessed her words, but after a moment, he seemed to decide her argument was irrelevant, when his gaze narrowed; he’d made his choice.

“Your death will please me, that is enough.”

She did the only thing she could think of at that moment; she lunged for him. Her fists hit hard but his chest was a wall of steel and it felt like she’d broke her hands. He shackled her wrists and swung her away from him and she hit the wall behind her and he trapped her there and locked his fingers around her throat, tightening his grip bit by bit as he lifted her up at the same time.

Now the Cyborgs, with permission of the Galactic High Council have free rein to pursue the last remnants of the human race and do with them as they see fit. Rorik, a cyborg lieutenant stumbles upon Laina hiding in a ship and he captures her, thinking to get information about the whereabouts of other humans. But when the cyborg doctor on Rorik's ship runs tests on Laina, a genetic anomaly in her hand raises questions and he suddenly wonders if Laina might hold the key to the survival of the cyborg race. Can he learn to trust and love his sworn enemy if it means he might save his people?

Rorik has just explained to Laina that if her parents were killed by cyborgs it was because the cyborgs were threatened by something her parents did. She doesn't believe him when he tells her they don't without provocation. During this conversation, she is still suffering from stress and her injuries from being captured by Rorik and his fellow cyborgs.

“No, not that can’t be true…” A dizzy spell knocked her at the back of her head and she stumbled into Rorik’s body, “it’s not possible,” she groaned as her vision swam in murky patterns. She surrendered and closed her eyes.

Strong, warm, arms banded about her waist, lifting her up; she gasped and groaned as the dizziness increased and an arm came up behind her knees, lifting her to a cradle position in Rorik’s arms as male voices talked around her and she struggled to focus.

“Give her a sedative.”

“I will, her body scans showed she’s malnourished and dehydrated. The shock of capture may be contributing to her level of stress; humans are prone to fainting, she needs to stay in the sick bay.”

A cold laugh followed, “and give her easy access to tools to hurt us? No, she’ll be taken to the brig until she’s well enough for questioning.”
